Good for you!

>>I'm safely out of the bottom category, and aspire to be low on the third.<<

That's progress.

>>If I can manage that, that means I'd be self-sufficient and wouldn't need disability anymore, but I also accept that this will probably take a long time.<<

It does take time to build a career and an audience.

>>Then again, considering the past year I was trying to nail down just basic necessities of life, making about $1300 in art this year so far seems pretty damn good!<<

True.

One of the hardest things for me is the massive discrepancy between artistic success and material security. I'm in what's usually considered the highest category for poetry earnings, or occasionally the second-highest if people like Maya Angelou are sectioned out as superfames. As poetry goes, my work is deliriously successful and profitable beyond any reasonable expectation. This is difficult to keep in mind when we are still scrabbling to survive, because it's not ideally suited as a dayjob in this context. But I have achieved the impossible, making money from poetry in today's world. I have a way of making money that doesn't require an employer's permission, and I can produce the kind of things my audience and I want without having to run it past Marketing. So I'm deeply grateful for my readers and donors.
