I mostly get my spasms in my back, but occasionally in my calf muscles. Walking helps, when it doesn't hurt too much. Torn muscles are worse; they can keep hurting for weeks.

Igor definitely has my sympathy, as do you.

As mentioned in some of the supporting resources, a key problem with cold weather is that it reduces blood flow to the muscles. That not only causes painful cramping, it makes muscles stiffer and more susceptible to injury from slipping or just lifting things.
