The use of "because" is evolving.  This is cool.

I am not convinced that it is behaving as a different part of speech, though.  I perceive this more as a deletion effect, omitting the preposition previously used with it: "I'm late because of the internet" --> "I'm late because internet."  It doesn't work the other way, keeping the preposition: *"I'm late of the internet."

Mmmmmm. I think you're right... it is an omission... but I also agree with houseboatonstyx that there is *commentary* there... Hmmm. seige says "But" is beginning to work the same way... and I could easily see "and" doing likewise... so, a shift in the way conjunctions work?

It's cool to actually pay attention and see the language evolve. Yes, some people would say "you're so weird", but that's how we roll. And I think in large part because, Internet. :D
