Huzzah for Hallmark

Hallmark has announced plans for printing a new line of greeting cards for same-sex marriages. Huzzah! Add your encouragement by emailing Hallmark and/or buying a card from them.

Meanwhile, the American Family Association is boycotting Hallmark.

Hmm, let's see, a big company is putting out a product that allows more people to celebrate the precise type of family they are forming; and a "family association" is trying to stomp on both the families and the company. "Family-friendly" means promoting all types of families.

Thus ensuring that gays and lesbians have the same opportunity everyone else has to be forced by guilt into buying $10 chunks of worthless cardboard to celebrate an endless, ever-increasing calendar of Hallmark Holidays created by their Marketing Department. Hurrah!

:D

Isn't it nice to be included? *chuckle*
I think it's the validation that makes this important. By printing the cards, Hallmark says to same-sex couples, "We see you. You're people. We value your business enough to cater to you." When it's still possible to get away with treating a group as second-class citizens, and you don't, that's worthy of respect.
... or they could:

Buy a blank card and customize it.
Send a free e-card with a gift card to an online store.
Make a gay marriage card using scrapbook techniques.
Attend the wedding and/or reception in person.

All Hallmark did was expand the options, so that people who want a high-end mass-market card for that occasion will have one. Sometimes it's nice to do things like that. I've got a box of generic thank-you cards in my desk drawer for ordinary occasions, but several times I've gone out and spent $5+ dollars on a fancy one when somebody really went above and beyond the call of duty for me.
Oh, come on now, you're taking me seriously and ruining my fun.

But seriously, commerce is both economics and a social activity. Merely being recognized in commerce is no small thing.

And so much bigotry is just fear of the unknown. Forced to tolerate someone for business purposes, after a while it's.. "eh, you're OK. Have a cup of coffee."

I suppose I've said it so often that it's boring. but I'll say it again: It's easy to hate a concept. It's hard to hate a person.
"Oh, come on now, you're taking me seriously and ruining my fun."

Sorry. I often take things seriously that weren't meant that way. My mother's family has an odd sense of humor and it has left mine somewhat impaired.
...thus the Limbaugh Crowd are right to hate moves like Hallmark's. Because if we meet, we won't fear. If we don't fear, we won't hate. If we don't hate, we won't be stupid. If we aren't stupid, our "betters" won't be able to control us any more.
Good point. Such moves are sensical if they wish to inhabit a world dominated by fear and hate.

I'd rather not, and I'm somewhat creeped out by people who do.

Oh, the reason why is simple. They don't want to live in a world dominated by fear and hate as such. They just want power, and the fear and hate give them that power.

Kewl! Goodon Hallmark for doing that! As for the ultra right Borg wannabes, hopefully enough people will see past their self-induced sense of righteous indignation and realize that everyone, so long as harm is brought to none, has the right to pursue life as he or she sees fit.

That depends on the state, and the job. A few states already extend various benefits to same-sex couples, sometimes through civil union but there are other options. More importantly, a number of companies -- including some big famous ones like Disney -- simply extend all their family benefits to gay employees. There are some lists online of companies that do that.
Luckily, the American Ignorance Family Association is stupid, and offers a simple webform, which can easily be edited into a missive of encouragement and dismissal of the American Fail Family Association's views.
