Being Poor
... is like this.  And no human being deserves to live like this, and many are far worse off than this.

I really need to write an UK version of that, or a more universal one... because trust me, I know all about it!

Yes...

That would be helpful.

Re: Yes...

Giving it some thought in order to distil it all down...

The comments and linkbacks go on, and on, and on, and ON and ON. There is no end.

"The poor will always be with you" is NOT an excuse to treat them like they deserve poverty.

Here's another:
Being poor are teenagers who don't realize how hard they have to work these days to be anything other than poor.

Yes...

Many hardworking people are poor. Hard work doesn't guarantee you enough to live on. In other words, society lies to people and then is surprised when there are problems. I feel that if you're working, you should not be poor; and if you don't make enough to live on, then someone is cheating you of fair recompense for your labor.

Re: Yes...

Poverty is a very complex problem.
I agree that if someone is working, they shouldn't be worrying whether they're going to be able to feed their families as well as pay their utilities.

In a similar vein, for me, unstable housing is like this.

I consider myself intensely fortunate that I live in a state that provides me real honest-to-god health insurance, so I actually can scrape by... mostly through the generosity of the people around me.

Being poor is feeling grateful for your living space full of rotting fiberglass and rusty nails, because at least you're not homeless, amirite?

O_O

How awful. I hope that things get better for you soon.

It pisses me off that this level of scrabbling is something people are expected to feel grateful for.

Re: O_O

It's okay, there is good news! Once the stuff gets moved out of it, we WILL have a room with four walls, a window, an AC, and a weird secret chamber behind a panel in the wall in which to hide during the zombie apocalypse! A room of our very own, for three months! 8D It'll be the most amazing thing ever.

In honor of our leaving the closet (well, until September, anyway), we are hosting a writeathon on the theme of Home.
