Scientific Integrity Cartoons

Science requires the freedom to research and publish without government interference. In order to make sound decisions, people need access to solid scientific information. By harassing scientists and tampering with study results, politicians put everyone at risk. We should know this; America used to criticize other countries for this sort of nonsense.

The Union of Concerned Scientists presents Science Idol, a chance for people to vote for their favorite cartoon satirizing political intereference.

I'm pleased to see that while many of America's journalists seem to be asleep on the job, the political cartoonists are wide awake and having a field day. Hmm ... I wonder if it would be feasible to have a news service based on satirical cartoons, with links under each to longer articles about the issue(s) being mocked?

Anyhow, these are some extraordinary cartoons. In particular, I note that #1 contains a visual metaphor for global warming that's among the best I've seen, because it will make sense to people who aren't intellectuals. ("You know the trick where you hold a magnifying lens over an anthill on a sunny day? Well, that's what we're doing to the Earth with global warming.") #6 has the pithiest summary of scientific findings. #7 takes a wry historical look at the effect of truth on political machinations.
