Poem: "Beastly Myths"

This poem is from the April 2, 2013 Poetry Fishbowl.  It was inspired by thnidu.  It has been sponsored by janetmiles.  It also fills the #8: Folio slot in the Vellum list for the Rainbowfic fest.

Beastly Myths

The adolescents gathered together,
giggling, over the cheap folio
of beastly myths:

the black-and-white dragon cat
whose breath weapon came out its bum,
the ludicrous duck-beaver with its venomous spurs
that supposedly laid eggs and nursed its young,
and the long-necked cow in orange polka-dots
that surely wouldn't survive with no means of defense.

"This is filly stuff,"
said the young centaur mare,
scratching her belly with a hind hoof.
"Nobody would ever believe in these!"

Whee! Cute and funny.

I recognize the other 2, but what's the cat?

Well...

It's a skunk. From "polecat."

Re: Well...

Yup. Got all three, though the skunk took by far the longest.

Fun!

A belated thought: It doesn't occur to the adolescents to wonder what the giraffe's legs might be able to do, besides carry it along. A Google search for giraffe kick came up with plenty of hits (as it were). But this one's source looks more trustworthy than most:

Once mature, the defensive kick of an adult giraffe is enough to seriously damage even the most determined predator, and many a lion has succumbed to the fierceness of their soup bowl size hooves. -- www.giraffeconservation.org

But, of course, we don't look for reputable sources for the power in a dragon's breath weapon or a unicorn's horn.

I was just waiting to see if someone would figure out the giraffe's weapon. Well reasoned!

For A Conflagration of Dragons, I rummaged through most of the periodic table looking for elements of use to dragons, starting with toxins and things that make pretty colors in fireworks. So that influences what the different types of dragons seek in treasure. But then I'm weird.

Re: *laugh*

Heh. What's wrong with weird? "Normal is a setting on my washing machine."

Re: *laugh*

Nothing wrong with being weird; I prefer it. I mean, look at the alternative. I just mean I'm not a reliable benchmark for most purposes.

There's gotta be at least one centaur who thinks that's awesome and wastes all his spare time drawing it.
