""Back in my foolish college days,
I cast a lifemate spell," Marjorie said.
"Turned out to be a bit darker than I expected,
which is to say permanent, and it stuck on repeat.""

Talk about making my eyes cross.... just thinking about that!
That brings real meaning to the phrase "be careful what you pray for 'cause you might just get it!"

Yes...

>>Talk about making my eyes cross.... just thinking about that!<<

I've seen people do some stupendously foolish things with magic, so I wanted to work with that ...

>>That brings real meaning to the phrase "be careful what you pray for 'cause you might just get it!"

... and I also wanted to twist the lifemates trope because people always seem to think of it as this magical-monogamy thing. But what if it didn't work like that?

Re: Yes...

I can only hope and pray that the spell included a "no jealousy" clause!!! (Knees are knocking just thinking what might happen if that weren't the case.)

Just imagine what might happen if someone cast a lifemate spell but somehow something got a bit messed up and they wound up with a lifemate who wasn't "good" for them...
Now that might truly become a fate far worse than death!

It didn't. Jealousy is just something that polyfolks have to learn how to deal with. (I keep telling the monogamists: pollies don't have a sex fetish, they have a communication fetish.) What the spell does is find and connect people who are deeply compatible. So there's a firm basis for forming a healthy family there. They just have to work through some stuff to get that far.

That's actually a standard warning for why love spells are a bad idea; not all spells are designed to avoid that problem. It can happen. People ignore the warnings anyhow.

Re: Yes...

You never can convince some people that an "almost right" love can be a terrible experience.
What's worse, quite a few of these people don't manage to learn their lesson the first time around either.

Re: Yes...

Oh, I've seen people make that mistake and figure out that they regretted casting a love spell on a specific person. Damned mess to clean up after. They usually learn something from it though.

Re: Yes...

During some of my darker moods I've joked that I could keep a soap opera in plot material for years....provided that no one working at the soap opera's company had good taste.
I'm devoutly thankful I no longer live in the Deep South--too many of the people who live down there are little more than two-legged lemmings.

Re: Yes...

People up here in the Midwest are a bit on the boring side but I can deal with that a lot easier.
