I've stopped watching for the "spring" bulbs to sprout. This is because they are sprouting in winter. I remember being freaked when they started sprouting in February. It was, I think, early or mid-January this year when I noticed some were already well up. For all I know they may have sprouted in December.

Winter dragged its feet getting here too. My daffodils were coming up by the time we got our first snowstorm since the ground didn't go below freezing until mid-December here. My grape hyacinths sprouted and grew all fall (which is apparently normal for them) and they seem totally untouched by the snow. Apparently enough light reaches their leaves under the snow to keep the chlorophil happy.
Plants adapt and roll with whatever punches the weather throws them.
This time last year I had daffodils blooming. This year, I have snow on the ground.
:)

I've had a few bulbs sprout and bloom in autumn, but they usually don't survive the experience. Trees that leaf out in the autumn after dropping their summer leaves also tend to die.
They can't bounce back after the stress thanks to the cold weather that finally arrives.
