New Community: Gore's Challenge

I have created a new community: gore_challenge

On July 17, 2008, Al Gore issued this challenge: "America must commit to producing 100% of our electricity from cheap, clean renewable energy sources like solar and wind within 10 years." This community is dedicated to meeting Gore's challenge. It features news relating to Gore's challenge, climate change, advances or opportunities in renewable fuels, sustainable business practices, community efforts toward sustainable energy, and related topics. If this appeals to you, please consider adding "Gore's challenge" to your Interests and joining this community -- the more people who know about this, the better our chance of meeting the goal.

America has accomplished great things in the past. We can do it again. This is part of my effort to make that happen.

I almost think we're at the point where like-minded people are going to have to gather together in communities to make any significant impact on anything. When we're all so spread out, it's much like trying to boil the ocean. It's when you hear stories about communities making things work that things that seem "impossible" or "preposterous" start looking "possible" and "smart."
See the Federation for Intentional Community site for general information on people living in community:

See the Ecovillage Network for communities that focus on green energy and sustainable building techniques:

After being leveled by a tornado, the town of Greensburg, Kansas has decided to rebuild entirely to green, sustainable parameters:

I'm especially encouraged by that last one, because it features a bunch of ordinary people -- not devout communitarians -- adapting to environmental pressure.
Here are a couple of articles you may be interested in: a guy in California wrote about his experience shopping for and installing a solar power system for his home. Also, he recently posted an update on how it's doing so far.
These look fascinating. Can I entice you to join gore_challenge and post them there?
Aw, I'm so much better at lurking. ;) But sure, I'll post them over there.

Hmm, an excuse to create a "green" icon....
Thank you! Lurkers-come-posters deserve extra perks. Is there a topic you'd love to see me discuss that I haven't yet?

And yes, you're welcome to create a green icon. In addition to the default green-Earth icon, I've made two others for gore_challenge already. I wanted something with a flag background but I didn't have a base like that; the closest I could come were fireworks.
