As is typical with our culture, there is a hyper-focus on the youth and their needs--even in reading--and not much on the old.

... and I have enough carryover from Native American culture that it bugs the living daylights out of me.

That's one reason I like Torn World: The Northern culture has a very strong respect for elders and is, hm, an egalitarian gerontocracy. The Council of Elders, which is composed of old people plus a few socially ept younger folks with disabilities, does most of the decision making. The Southerners are more meritocratic but their system for that shifts much of the responsibility to the most experienced, older practitioners of science and trade.

Elizabeth Moon's Remnant Population is still one of my favorite books.
