Poem: "Prestige and Power"

This poem came out of the December 4, 2012 Poetry Fishbowl.  It was inspired by a prompt from Dreamwidth user cadenzamuse.  It has been sponsored by Anthony & Shirley Barrette.  You can read more about chess with its king and queen online.

Prestige and Power

In chess, everything is reflection.
The King oversees the enemy; the Queen gets her color.

He moves in small steps.
She sweeps the whole board with her skirts.

When pawns get promoted, they most often
become queens, like so many ladies-in-waiting.

The King has all the prestige,
for once he falls, the game is over.

The Queen has all the power,
and it is up to her to protect everyone.

In chess, reflection is everything:
the pawns go first, and the Queen oversees the endgame.

Would you be all right if I linked/quoted to/from this in Sixty-Four squared? The names of the stories (I see The Scholar's Mate, as being only the first) are taken from chess games, and this fits two of the characters to a ... well, pawn.

Go for it!

Linking is always okay for my public posts; I almost never post anything that's not meant to be read widely, and if I do, I lock it.

For quotes, I prefer that people ask first; you're good to go on that. I'm flattered that you find my work relevant to yours. If you let me know what you do and give me a link, I can promote it to my audience.

I have noticed the chess-related names in your project. It's something I do occasionally -- one of my earlier science fiction stories was "Breakthrough Combination."

Re: Go for it!

Thank you! I'll send you the chapter, if you like, ahead of my posting it, so you can be sure it's kosher before publication. I'm guessing it'll be a few more chapters, however. :) I'll definitely send you the link when it's set.

Meantime, I'm hoping to have the 'Hal's introduction' chapter posted tonight.

Sure, that sounds good.
