Pick Your Own

Here is a guide to U-Pick farms all over America. It includes fruit, pumpkins, Christmas trees, and more! There are canning recipes and supply sources too.

Picking your own food can be a fun family activity, and it gives you a sense of accomplishment. It usually saves money over storebought produce.

That is cool. Even my neck of the woods is on there.
I would agree with you, but then I just read your post about the "do-it-yourself economy".... thinking.....thinking...thinking..

Well, now that I think about it, I guess I'm "pro-DIYS" because well I'm raising chickens for meat and eggs, instead of buying them, I try to dry my clothes outside some of the time, I can sew my own clothes, etc. If you look at DIYS as self sustainability, then it does make sense. Activities that reconnect us to the earth are positive things.

That all said, I do think self service checkout computers are a waste of time.
For me it depends on connection as well as convenience. When I'm involved in my own food production and acquisition, those are valuable skills and that increases my connection to what I eat and where it comes from. I can also choose whether to pick fruit myself or buy it from a store (or an orchard, etc.). What I resent is being stuck doing someone else's job that I am not good at and hate doing -- all the endless dicking around with paperwork or automated systems.

It doesn't help that machinery tends to foul up around me. Plants like me; I can even pick raspberries without leaving skin behind.
