We would have made our share of mistakes and horrid political decisions, but... the idea of two countries in different continents (or at the very least at opposite ends of the same one, depending on how one sees Eurasia)seeing each other as equal partners makes me too wish that was the direction history had taken for real.

I think the parallax of experience helps. In nether-Earth the two superpowers are the United Kingdom and China. The UK is a little less trigger-happy and China is a little less insular. So they're rivals rather than enemies, and occasionally people manage to cooperate. That's important background for The Steamsmith series.
