Poem: "Talk Like ..."

This poem came out of the September 18, 2012 Poetry Fishbowl.  It was inspired by a prompt from the_vulture for the holiday Talk Like a Pirate Day.  It also fills the "fun" square on my card for the Cottoncandy_bingo fest.  It has been sponsored by Anthony & Shirley Barrette.  This poem belongs to the Monster House series, which you can explore further on the Serial Poetry page.

Talk Like ...

I came home to find a shipwreck in the living room.
"Avast ye, dog!" cried the bogeyman
as he skidded down the tilting deck of the shadow-galleon.
The little old lady ghost clung to the bow as a figurehead.

"It's Talk Like a Pirate Day," my wife reminded me.
"Arr, matey!" I agreed, and swatted her rear.
"I made some would-be pirates cry in their rum today,"
she said.  "They got caught in the firewall,
so I said only proper privateers could plunder my database
and they should come back with a Letter of Marque and Reprisal."

Our daughter ran through the room
waving a rubber sword and yelling,
"Long live Pirate Bay!
Information wants to be freeeeeee!"

"She's playing for the other team,"
my wife said.

"The public domain is a waste of good ideas
and a violation of intellectual property rights,"
our son shot back, clad in eyepatch and feathered hat.
"Long live copyright!  Corporations are people too!"

BOOM!  went the illusory cannons
and the lurking shadow spun the ship's wheel.

"Augh!  You got me!" our daughter wailed,
clutching at her chest as she flopped onto the couch.
"I release all my copyrights to the people."

"Noooooo!"  our son shouted.
"Curses, you defeat me even in death!"
He tore off his hat and stomped on it.

"We have the weirdest kids on the block,"
I said to my wife.

"High five," she said,
and we did.

*cackles gleefully*

Information wants to be free, but authors want to put food on the table. Somewhere in between is a balance point.

That is the challenge.
