Poem: "Homemade"

This poem came from the September 18, 2012 Poetry Fishbowl.  It was inspired by a prompt from siege.  It also fills the "meal" square on my card for the Cottoncandy_bingo fest.  It has been sponsored by Anthony & Shirley Barrette.  This poem belongs to the Monster House series, and you can read more about that on the Serial Poetry page.

Homemade

I love my new house (old house, really,
although it's new to me) and particularly
the kitchen with its plentiful counter space.
I slice carrots and string peas,
dice onions and throw the mushrooms in whole
for a vegetable medley.

My girl bakes bread from scratch,
fluffy as a cloud,
and the little old lady ghost
ensures that it rises
even on a cold, dry day.

The bogeyman makes spaghetti and meatballs,
kneading the raw hamburger with his bare hands
to blend in the cracker crumbs and egg and herbs.
There are always more than enough meatballs to go around.

The monsters under-the-bed and in-the-closet
make kitchen sink cookies crammed with every ingredient
and half the batch is gone by the time they cool.

Every meal we fix together fills the room with
sweet and savory fragrances, time turned into taste.

This is what makes a house into a home.
