Mickey Finn from the Callahan's books is definitely one of our most memorable. Creepy tall guy with terrifying despair eyes, walks up to the bar and slams back ten drinks one after the other, bam bam bam. Then, showing no sign of intoxication, he follows the house tradition of throwing each glass into the fireplace as a toast, one after the other. Ten toasts, and every one he makes is the same thing, said in a painfully blank voice: "To my profession."

Then you get to find out what his profession is.

I'm actually hard-pressed to think of a more powerful entrance for a character. I'll have to come back to it.
