Poem: "Her Verdant Skirts" - The Wordsmith's Forge
The Writing & Other Projects of Elizabeth Barrette
Poem: "Her Verdant Skirts"
According to the generally sponsored poetry poll for July, "Her Verdant Skirts" was by far the most popular. I used this page of photos and description for some inspiration in addition to the prompts by janetmiles, stonetalker, and flutterbychild.

Her Verdant Skirts

The jungle straddles the lines
That people have drawn
Beneath her notice,
Spanning Brazil and
Argentina and Paraguay.

At Iguaçu Falls
She lifts her verdant skirts,
Flashing the pure white lace
Of her petticoats,
Ankles braceleted by rainbows.

In a setting of solid gold sunlight,
Two scarlet macaws pose
Motionless as rubies
Pinned to the green velvet breast
Of her gown.

The tourists gawk on the boardwalks,
Staring up the jungle’s skirts, but
She smiles a secret smile
And does not move.
They will never
See through the mist to her
