America Off Track

I saw these articles side by side today:

Bill Moyers Journal | Conservative Movement Woes
On Bill Moyers Journal, "Conservatives Mickey Edwards and Ross Douthat discuss why they believe their movement has gone off track during the last eight years and what it means for the Republican Party."

Well, let's see -- it used to be that conservatives preferred to tell the government to butt out of people's private lives, instead of handing it a tube of KY jelly and telling America to bend over.

Senate Accepts Retroactive Immunity for Telecoms
Christopher Kuttruff reports for Truthout: "The Senate voted 68-29 on Wednesday to broaden the authority of the executive branch by approving changes to the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act (FISA). The FISA Amendments Act of 2008 (H.R.6304) was passed by the House on June 20."

Evidently the politicians have planned ahead and know how to handle universal snooping, though...

Report Finds Gaps in Federal E-Mail Records
Lyndsey Layton reports for The Washington Post: "Federal officials inconsistently preserve government e-mail, creating gaps in the public record and making it difficult for the public to understand the activities of the government, according to a report released by the Government Accountability Office yesterday."

Nonsense like this is wrong and against the Constitution. It would be nice if all the people wearing idiotic flag pins and paying lip service to "the American way" would actually support it when it counts. Because constant surveillance is one of the things people used to come here to escape.

I find our last decade’s batch of politicians to be depressing and frustrating. And scary. And even moreso their “spin-handlers”. Sigh. Too much dwelling on what they’re doing is depressing. And it’s sad that our best hope for turning this around didn’t fly in to vote against the FISA “compromise”.
