Poem: "Old Feelings, New Feelings"

This is the freebie for the July 2012 Muse Fusion.  It was inspired by a prompt from ellenmillion.

Old Feelings, New Feelings

Tenyo has known Frei
all their lives,
his boyish mischief
slowly turning
to mannish charm.

Though she cannot see,
she can hear
his quick footfalls
still rushing headlong
into everything.

Tenyo does not rush;
she always moves
with careful deliberation.
Her feelings, too,
are slow and thoughtful.

The night after they pass
their adulthood tests,
Tenyo listens to
the throbbing drums
and crackling fire.

The others are dancing
while she sits, waiting.
Something jingles nearby,
something attached to
quick footsteps.

"I brought you this,"
Frei says to Tenyo.
The bell feels
cool and smooth
in her palm.

Tenyo reaches out,
and Frei cups
her other hand
to his face, waiting
for her response.

Her feelings for him
are old as summer ice,
new as late winter sunrise.
Tenyo adds his bead
to her necklace.

Nice!
I'm glad you like it.

One interesting thing about the Northern age-sets is the different kinds of relationships that develop within them. Some age-mates feel like siblings, while for others it's more like the boy/girl next door.
