Buying Characters

So Dreamworks is buying a bunch of cartoon characters.  Cool.  I hope they do great things with that stuff.

But it gave me a new idea for Fun Things To Do With Entirely Too Much Money.  Buy some awesome character(s) and then release the material to the public domain.  Here, everybody, go make new stuff we'll all enjoy, without fear of lawsuit.  Then maybe challenge some of the major holders to release a character or two.

One of my pipe-dreams would be buying the rights to Gargoyles from Disney and giving them to Greg Weisman. They aren't making the series available completely on DVD, and the sequel in comic format was short-lived AFAIK because of Disney's licensing fees... it's a shame, really.
I would love that. It's a favorite series, though I've only seen the DVD episodes. I wish it was fully available. They had such an awesome cast of voice actors.

If I had the money I'd buy Marvel and DC then do exactly that, with the clause that although all rights pertain to the author, I get the first dibs on publishing. [although if I decline, they're well within their rights to take it elsewhere or publish it themselves.]

Heck, pretty sure you could turn a profit just doing print-on-demand of the results...and it couldn't be any less chaotic! Plus, there's some 'amateurs' out there that've got the currently employed 'professionals' beat hollow.. [Rob Liefild, I'm looking at you]
I probably wouldn't release all the characters, but I'd release some of them, including some of the majors. And then I would watch the results, and pick out some of the awesomest writers and artists to offer them jobs. Along with running targeted contests for "best character of color," "best non-hourglass female character," etc. hoping to get boost diversity of material and contributors.
