Cybernetic Hate Crime

A man was attacked in a restaurant for wearing cybernetic equipment.  This is not the first such incident I've heard of.  You pretty much can't travel safely in America if you have computer gear attached to your person.  Even medical devices have been used to bar people from airplanes in some cases, let alone other types of adaptive equipment or personal choices.  It's not supposed to happen to handicapped people, but it does; and there don't seem to be protections for anyone else.  Being visibly different is always at least a small risk, but people seem particularly hostile to obviously technological devices.

I figure it was one of two things: an ape-brain urge to be violent for hateful reasons, or a lizard-brain urge to attack a visibly different individual. Both are atavistic responses, not really the kind of front-brain activity usually described as "thinking." The answer to "what were they thinking?" is quite often "they weren't."
Yeah, God forbid that someone should come in wearing cat ears and tail or any of a wide variety of other distinguishing fashion accessories.
Prevailing fashions tend to register as socially acceptable, even if they're worn by groups not widely liked, because they're a mass effect. It's the rare stuff that's perceived as a threat and something to be attacked. Yes, it does happen to people wearing anthropomorphic items. That's a problem for folks with species dysphoria who cope with adaptive equipment.
I'm just curious if they are going to pull the 'OMG I thought the guy was a Borg or the Terminator in disguise' defense. x_x
Biologically speaking, that probably is why. Humans tend to react negatively, and quite violently, to technological things that mimic humanity but don't come up to human standards. Hence why certain equipment gets vandalized more often, and why those shows exist in the first place. It's something humanity finds creepy and threatening. It doesn't have to be about those specific examples.
