I got the idea from two things: 1. How the Chinese have no air element, but they have wood and metal. 2. The Yahgahn have 6 dimensions instead of 3. Well, six spacial dimensions. (An idea I got from Stargate.) I started wondering if Yahgahn's system would be different. Took a while, but I eventually came up with the nine-element system.

I also considered gravity as an element, but it wouldn't fit. Nine is a powerful number in Yahgahn, because it's three sets of three. (Though because the people of Traipah of use base 6 math, they would call nine "thirteen.")
