Years ago I knew someone who worked a desk job at a bank who kept a small hermit crab in a sand-filled glass bowl on her desk. She had several small fancy seashells that she kept in the bowl along with her crab. She fed the crab bits of fruit and meat and the crab transferred itself from one shell to the next every few days apparently out of sheer boredom.

That glass shell is the neatest thing I've seen lately though.
