According to the Environment News Service, "'Nearly one-third of Iowa is
already submerged and water levels continue to rise,' said US Senator
Chuck Grassley of Iowa, urging federal financial assistance for his state.
Waters are still rising in many parts of the state and the president
responded."

I agree that the terminology ignores new trends. I wasn't surprised by this summer's nasty floods in my area: we've had several summer floods in previous years. The first was an appalling shock. At this point, it still feels deeply wrong, but it's no longer shocking. I am disturbingly reminded that my part of central Illinois is reclaimed swamp land, though: what used to be called "slough," or prairie swamp.

I just saw a very sad news report about a family farmer who lost most of his pigs in the flood in Iowa.
