Education Charity

This is so cool! There's a website called DonorsChoose that organizes classroom projects in need of funding. Teachers describe a project, its goals, its necessary materials, and the projected cost. Donors can choose which ones they want to support. You can search by keyword, cost range, school location, poverty rating, etc. If you're interested in education, and you think that lack of funds is undercutting the classroom experience ... here is a way to help immediately and directly.

I participated in a fundraiser (through a blog I follow) for Donors Choose - Sarah's blog readers raised $100 K! I even got a follow-up package from the teacher with notes from the students thanking me for funding their project (it was a Mexican Day of the Dead-themed activity). I can't tell you how rewarding it was to get that feedback!

That's quite an impact. I love seeing how the Internet can help make a positive, practical effect in people's lives. It's a lot like magic in that way -- you have to think twice to figure out how to apply it to the material world, but it can be done, and the forces involved are quite potent.
