Horses in Winter

Writers may enjoy this article about how well (or poorly) horses deal with frigid weather and snow/ice.  Pay attention to breeds, too.  A tough Friesian may do fine in weather that leaves an Arabian shivering in his blanket.

very interesting! my icelandic horse stjarni is our barn's "icebreaker" in winter; he plows through the chest-deep (on him) snow in winter, and the other horses will follow in the path. he grows a winter coat like a yak, too :)

if one wants to write about horses in snow in fiction, i would recommend looking to icelandic history for details on what a good cold-adapted breed can and cannot do.
