Watch for "Red Tails"

George Lucas has created a movie, Red Tails, about the Tuskegee Airmen, black heroes from WWII. Apparently most folks don't think this kind of film will make money; Lucas had to produce it independently. If you've got pocket money, and you're into military history, American history, ethnic studies, and/or action-adventure movies then consider buying a ticket to prove them wrong.  Thanks to Steven Barnes for the tip.

Glory made an okay amount of money. I'm wondering whether it's the retro aviation angle rather than just the race angle that makes people leery, since the last pilot-related films out there were things like Flyboys or Pearl Harbor which didn't go over well.
I suspect that both the historic and the race aspects counted against it. Historic films are hit or miss; sometimes people will back them. But really, nobody in Hollywood ever seems to go for a movie that has a substantial number of black actors. It's very very rare for such a film to attract the support it needs. I'm glad that Lucas said "Fuck 'em, I'll do it myself."
Apparently Danny Glover has been trying for years to get funding to make a movie about the Haitian revolution, and can't get it greenlit because there are no white characters. And the studios are quite up front about that.

It's unbelievably depressing. I'm glad this movie was made, and I hope it goes over well.

That would be so very cool.

Epic, epic wank. Failmantium. Suck to the power of black holes made by Microsoft.

Well, maybe someday it will get crowdfunded.

Things like this are why my list of fun things to do with entirely too much money has "stage Shakespeare in the Bush with all-black cast" on it.
The Pritzker Military Library up in Chicago sent around an email the other day promoting this movie. They had a one-question trivia quiz that the first-njne-correct-answers-to would win pairs of tickets to an advance screening of Red Tails. Makes me wish I lived closer to Chicago.

Several of our local Civil Air Patrol folks are quite jazzed to see this movie when it comes to Little Rock.
That sounds like a great way to promote the movie.
