I can remember George Alec Effinger playing around with concepts much like your insta-learn--was he the author?
:)

I'm sorry, I don't remember anything about the title or author of the story, only vaguely the name of the anthology. :( I'm really bummed out by that too, because now I'm not fourteen and would like to read that story again!

I've encountered the same problem too.
I never was interested in who wrote something. I just enjoyed the reading. It wasn't until I reached college age that it finally dawned on me that if I enjoyed a book by a certain author that I MIGHT ENJOY SOME OF THAT AUTHOR'S OTHER WORK. Weird, I know, considering how basic a concept it is.
Part of my problem was that I never laid eyes on a genuine BOOK STORE until I was in college. That was the first time I ever saw fiction neatly arranged by genre and then I saw several of a writer's books sitting side by side and I started recognizing books I'd already read. (Talk about the brain-light switching on!!!)
The public library where I'd always gotten my SCI-FI reading material before usually only had a single book by each author--in paperback--which it kept in a wire rack jumbled up with romances and westerns.
:\
