When donors sponsor poems, that changes unpublished poems into published poems. When someone buys a book or ebook of poetry, that doesn't happen.

Also, it is a lot cheaper to buy a book or ebook than to sponsor as many poems as would be in there. The collection consists of reprints in a form that is more convenient than, in this case, scrolling through the hundreds of poems in the "poem" tag on my blog.

The difference between a book purchase and a small donation towards a large epic is small, I think? I and 30-plus other people need to put $3 towards a large epic to see it published (and seeing only part of it is perhaps worse than none). If a book contains only reprints of already-sponsored poems, the book-buyer is arguably getting a tiny bit less. If the book (or ebook) contains some (small?) number of not-otherwise-published poems, some of the question is whether book sales then cover at least the sponsoring cost of the new poems plus the overhead costs of publishing the book, presumably with hope of eventually covering more and/or creating an income stream with very low additional overhead. Meanwhile the book-buyer is, as you say, paying mostly for convenience and proper arrangement.
