Indian Identity

Here's an article, "How do you prove you're an Indian?" that looks at the challenges of tribal identity.  This is one of the most racist things that America does, which has entrenched itself in tribals cultures.  The author raises the point that being Indian is about more than just who your ancestors were, if you're lucky enough to be able to show that.  It's about where you live, how you live, what language you speak, how much you know about your culture.

If I had my way?  I'd count language equal to genetics.  Speaking a tribal language is among the most subversive and powerful things you can do.  It influences how you think about the world.  That's why the invaders went to great lengths to kill off the native languages, and succeeded with most.

I don't know how I feel about that. It's possible to lose so much you know? Like the California guys? The Spanish really did a number on the locals, there's so little left. And I know just how much it sucks to soak in being different, and then have any society tell you you're as white as the richest honky in Los Gatos. I can't avoid it but I wouldn't wish it on anyone.
