What Joss Whedon Is All About
I was watching an interview with Joss Whedon and some Buffy  cast members today.  James Marsters (Spike) summed it up perfectly: "On another series, we'd know what's going to happen next.  Somebody gets their arm broken, somebody gets kissed.  YOU could turn us into SNAILS."

My characters say things like that to me.  Gotta love it.

Joss Whedon is truly a master of the art.

Like pianos falling from the sky.

I've read tens of thousands of books, watched television and movies, and have enough extrapolative ability that it's HARD to surprise me. Joss Whedon manages to do it anyway, not always, but often enough that he's toward the high end of the scale for the few people who can do it at all.

His ability to take commonplace experiences and transmute them into epic speculative renditions is so impressive that I actually added him to my litany of gratitude for when the shit hits the fan:

1) No one is currently trying to assassinate me,
2) I am not personally responsible for saving the world in the next 24 hours,
3) and if this building/vehicle catches fire there is an entire atmosphere of breathable air into which we can flee.

... and I don't live in a universe scripted by Joss Whedon.

(That should tell you something about the kind of lives I've lived, and that my characters live, when it's my response to inconveniences like getting stuck in a snowdrift.)

Re: Well...

haikujaguar can surprise me, and is also good for an average of one new vocabulary term per novel. That's on par with Alan Dean Foster.

Re: Well...

She has several hardcopy books and a bunch of electronic stuff on Smashwords. But a number of her projects are available for free if you want to read them off the website.

Re: Well...

*laugh* Yeah, it's all about what you're used to. Joss rarely pulls his punches unless playing in somebody else's sandbox. And when he's doing the latter, his fans are standing around in their asbestos full-plate armor going, "Wow, he barely tapped us that time. Joss, you okay, buddy?" while everyone else is lying on the ground whimpering.
