The Women of Star Trek

I found this brilliant website with essays about the women (and other female or female-esque beings) who appeared in Star Trek: The Original Series.  I am especially charmed by the ones about Uhura, T'Pau, T'Pring, Stella, and the Mother Horta.

However, I still think Kirk was a horndog who porked quite a lot of female-shaped beings across the galaxy.  And I'm aware that the show went for eyecandy in dressing actresses ... but I'm mostly okay with that, because I like looking at hot women, and most of them were SMART as well as beautiful.

Kirk is pretty much what men were "supposed" to be in the sixites;
Picard was pretty much what men were "supposed" to be in the nineties...

I think it's an improvement...

Good point. I do like both Kirk and Picard. It's just that Kirk has a longer chain to jerk him around by. You have to try a lot harder to knock Picard off balance.

Human, half-human, quarter-human, and I'll bet there are energy beings who turned around after an encounter with Kirk and went, "ZOMGWTFBBQ that meat muppet KNOCKED ME UP!"

Yeah, only Jack Harkness from Dr. Who has Kirk beat, since Jack is bisexual. Actually, Jack Harkness is ATMASTTD. (Anything That Moves And Some Things That Don't.) I wouldn't be surprised if Jack Harkness is the reason that species of humanoid trees came into being, by getting his groove on with a tree one day. :-D Seriously... human, alien, male, female, other gender, none of that matters to Captain Jack Harkness. :-)

Ditto there. Especially with males. I almost never crush on a male for looks alone. If I like a male for non-physical reasons, though, they will be handsome to me no matter what. Same applies to females, but I *can* crush on females by looks alone. Though if someone's personality really sucks (stupid AND mean/nasty; stupid and kindly are okay) then their horrible personality makes them - male or female - ugly in my eyes, no matter what I thought of their looks before. Like, the exact same appearance changes depending on what I know/sense of their personality.

*laugh* Kinda makes you want to put Jack Harkness and Quinn into a screwdriver ship and see how long it takes them to reach a neighboring galaxy.

Star Trek was radical for its time, and tried to be even more radical than the network allowed. The Number One was the original "Spock", and Nichelle Nichols was asked to read the part of Spock in her audition. (Which, okay, wouldn't *that* have been *awesome*?) Even as filmed, the cast was gender mixed and ethnically diverse, with only a couple of prominent characters who were white male Americans. In the 60s, having a Russian character as a good guy was pretty radical too. It had television's first interracial kiss, which was a Big Deal to Americans at the time but was not noteworthy at all to the characters.

The show had many flaws, and in a lot of ways it doesn't hold up to modern standards. But given what they had to work with, the cast and crew did an excellent job.

I always view the original series with an eye toward its historical context. It racked up SO MANY firsts. It really was radical at the time. Even today the best episodes stand out for addressing issues that people often ignore. I'll always love it.

Even if Kirk was the kind of guy who'd try to hit on me in college and get blown off with, "I'm sorry, I only date people with an IQ in the positive integers." Though I would happily have called on him if I'd needed cannon fodder.

If a man doesn't have a good sense of humor and he can't get me laughing, he's going to have a hard time getting me to notice him no matter how good looking he is.
