I tend to dislike entertainment in which the bad guys get away with being horrid. If I wanted that, I'd watch the news. This is a key reason why I have bailed out of some television or fiction.
However, I do enjoy a slow windup involving characters you love to hate. It is so much more satisfying that way, when they are finally flung under the wheels of Fate and ground to quivering pulp.
In my own writing, I tend to favor poetic justice in which the villain's particular type of flaw will play into their ultimate destruction. Occasionally, a villain may get what they want -- or think they want -- but the storyline suggests it will not be as gratifying as they expected it to be. Sometimes the worst punishment is realizing that you were barking up the wrong tree all along.
