Threatened Infrastructure

Coastal flooding not only affects homes and businesses, it also threatens important infrastructure such as power plants and subways.  Utilities were often built on low-lying land to save money, which leaves them more vulnerable, especially as sunny-day floods increase.

On the bright side, the article also notes that vulnerable coastal properties are selling slower and for lower prices.  That means the more astute people are starting to pull back from the waterfronts in enough numbers to register.  This increases the urgency of doing so while it's still possible to make some money from selling one's old property, because at some point that market will crash.

Toad Homes

This article talks about toad homes.  I have two things to add:

1) If you use clay pots, DO NOT paint them.  Use unglazed, unpained pots so that when they get wet, they provide a cooler and wetter environment inside.  Sealing the clay undermines this process.

2) You can make a much better amphibian home with a mulch pile.  It will host a whole detritus food chain.  Toads and other beneficial creatures can hide in there during hot, dry, or cold weather.

Poem: "Christmas Feathers"

This poem came out of the November 19, 2019 Poetry Fishbowl. It was inspired and sponsored by Anthony & Shirley Barrette. It also fills the "Christmas" square in my 7-1-19 card for the Winterfest in July Bingo fest. This poem belongs to the series Arts and Crafts America.
