... improves mental health and cognitive function.

Flip it around and you can see that debt destroys mental health and makes it hard for people to think or function.  Duh.

... for all kinds of addictive substances from alcohol to drugs

This is just a tiny, specific example of several much broader principles:

1) The Rat Park effect.  Addiction is strongly driven by miserable environmental factors.  In a positive environment, few individuals develop addiction and those who already have it tend to shake it off.  So the most effective treatment for long-term recovery is putting people in a healthy, happy environment while that same environment minimizes the risk of developing addiction in the first place.

2) Nature views boost healing from all kinds of illness and injury.  When separated from nature, people heal slower and feel worse while doing so.  This informs the choice of hospital artwork and healing gardens, which are not "frills" but evidence-based parts of a treatment plan.

3) People need at least 2 hours of nature per week for healthNature deficit disorder causes a wide range of mental and physical problems in people of all ages, although it was originally described regarding children.  This problem affects many people in modern society, with ruinous results.

In short: if you don't have problems, lack of nature is likely to give you some; and if you have problems, exposure to nature can help them or at least make you feel better.

The knob on our main door has been failing for a while.  Yesterday it gave up the ghost, jamming the door closed.  :/  My partner Doug managed to get the knob off but not the locking mechanism.

Today we had a locksmith come out and remove the remainder.  I was worried about getting an adequate replacement for the doorknob, since I've had repeated problems with not being able to find acceptable replacements for defunct products.  The first couple knobs the locksmith offered were the crappy modern cylinder kind.  But after I described my parameters, he produced a knob very similar to the original.  \o/  He also moved the latch to a better position so the door will catch easily instead of having to be manhandled into place which is how the old knob got so beat up.

Problem solved.  :D

This is a remnant prairie up near Chicago.  Listen to what happens when a blue-collar dude becomes a nature nerd.  He talks about sophisticated topics in very earthy terms with the scientific ones sprinkled in.  It is adorable.  I can't help thinking that if Shiv starts imitating Aida, it's going to sound a lot like this!  :D
