Sleep Learning

Here's another study that says humans can't learn in their sleep

Yeah, whatever.  Call it a superpower if you want, but I used to boost my language scores by letting the audiotapes run at night for however long it took the walkman to hangfire.  I'd gain about a grade level doing that.  Sure, I'm already great at languages, but it's a lot easier to load grammar and pronunciation into the subconscious while the monkey is sleeping.  No point making it harder than it needs to be.

Also, if you want to test sleep learning, then play things while people sleep and see if they learn better than a control group who's not doing that.  Facts now, those aren't so easy to pick up.  Languages and music seem to work fine.  Possibly other things will work.  But for fucksake, find out what specific things people are trying to learn in their sleep and test that, not abstract sounds.

Yoga Helps Students

Yoga and mindfulness reduce student anxiety.

Coping skills are good.  However, it would be better to reduce stress that destroys children's health in the first place, and give them a more positive educational environment.  Children are biologically designed for learn, and to ensure that, it's hooked to the reward circuit.  If you're turning that into anxiety somehow, you are seriously fucking up the process.

Email vs Texting

Apparently most people use email very differently than I do.  I can see why they'd hate it if they only use it for things they hate, such as work.  For me, I love my work.  I don't have local friends, so my friendly relationships exist in email and blogs.  I hate all the short message options, because I hate short messages.  I don't think in soundbites.  The topics I enjoy discussing don't fit in soundbites.  I despise phones.  This is only partly because modern ones tend to break when I touch them, are all but unintelligible, and hurt my ears.  I hated phones before that; it's just worse now.  At least the old landline phones were usable. But email is great.  I can answer it at my convenience.  Discussions fit into it just fine.  I can go back to look at older ones if I need to.

Poem: "On This Amazing Journey"

This poem came out of the August 7, 2018 Poetry Fishbowl. It was inspired by prompts from [personal profile] siliconshaman, Willow, and [personal profile] mama_kestrel. It also fills the "modern wilderness" square in my 8-7-18 card for the Fairy Tales Bingo fest. This poem belongs to the series Polychrome Heroics.

Warning: This poem contains bigots and their rude behavior.
