Poem: "The Helping Hand of a Neighbor"
In Which France Has a Clue

Winterfaire 2017 is still running, and currently has 105 comments. \o/ If you have goods or services for sale that would make good gifts, please post a booth; and if you're shopping, come see what's on offer! We still have a few open linkback poems if you boost the signal.

Poem: "The Most Room in Your Heart" has a lengthy (currently 52 comments) discussion about door etiquette, baby-related changes, housemate interactions, everyday use of EFA techniques, authorial phrasing, causal factors vs. fault, the challenges of patchy life skills, and other interesting stuff.

A couple of folks are interested in cosponsoring "Homemade Families."

The 2017 Holiday Poetry Sale will begin later today. It's going to take a while for me to set up the post using materials I compiled over the weekend.

Poetry in Microfunding:
"The Inner Transition" is now complete.  Valor's Widow finishes conversations with Stylet and puts him to bed.  "The Higher a Monkey Climbs" belongs to Polychrome Heroics and has 29 new verses.  Pips and Jules explore the Pho Real food truck park  This one is down to just $52, and finishing it will open the way for its sequel introducing Pips to Joshua and family.

The weather has been mostly temperate here, aside from obnoxious cold rain intermittently while we were holiday shopping.  Seen at the birdfeeders this week: a flock of sparrows, several dark-eyed juncoes, and a lady cardinal.  I've also seen a rabbit hanging around the patio -- they scavenge dropped seed under the feeders.

2017 Holiday Poetry Sale

The Holiday Poetry Sale is now CLOSED.  Thank you all for your generosity!

A silver lantern glazed with cobalt glass panes sends a flickering blue light over the snow...

Welcome to the 2017 Holiday Poetry Sale! Today through Friday, December 22, my remaining fishbowl poems from 2017 are half price. So are poems from the Creative Jam and other activities. Especially check out the epics; they range from $16.50 to $271, so if you've been yearning for an epic of your very own, now's the time! For those of you with just a few dollars to spend, we're starting with six poems at $2.50 and four at $5. We only have one epic open, in Polychrome Heroics, so you're free to open another and lock in the sale price. Thumbnail descriptions of the individual poems appear in the first section which is listed by price.

Poems for Mom & Dad

My parents have holiday plans, so I've already given them their batch of poems for the Holiday Poetry Sale:

"The Power of the Sun"
Eclipse poem.

"If You Love It, Put a Ring on It"
Eclipse poem.

"Chaos and Disruption"
Summary: Jerryrigger tells a wannabe anarchist what anarchy is really like.

"The Willingness to Surrender Ideas"
Story Date: Week 4, Day 3
Summary: After turning himself over to the police, Stylet begins negotiations with the authorities.

"Disorientation and Reorientation"
A backchannel prompt inspired the free-verse poem "Disorientation and Reorientation." An intersex teen struggles to cope with family lies, awkward biology, and superpowers. Dr. G lends a hand sorting it out.

"What Makes the Feast"
A backchannel prompt from Shirley Barrette inspired the free-verse poem "What Makes the Feast." Vagary takes Calliope to a party at Arcadia East and introduces her to his friends. It's fun, but a little nerve-wracking at times.

I have payment in hand.  I still have a leftover poem from the last batch, though, and I want to get that posted before pinging them about the new batch.

Poem: "Like Oil to a Lamp"

This poem came out of the April 18, 2017 Poetry Fishbowl. It was inspired by a prompt from DW user Serpentine.  It also fills the "party" square in my 11-1-16 card for the Fall Festival Bingo.  This poem has been sponsored by DW user Technoshaman.  It belongs to the series Clay of Life.

Like Oil to a Lamp

A guest comes
     wandering, to the house
     hungry, to the table.

A host comes
     happily, to the door
     generously, to the diners.

The soup is poured
     cold red borscht and
     hot chicken-feet broth.

The sides are served
     kreplach filled with potato
     and kugel made with carrots.

The fish is brought
     smooth salty lox and
     sweetened gefilte fish.

The meat is sliced
     corned beef brisket
     and pickled tongue.

The sweet bread is put out
     babka full of cinnamon and
     bialys full of poppy seeds.

Guest and host are
     grateful for the food
     thankful for the company.

These truths are known
food to a man is like oil to a lamp.
companionship to a soul is like water to a garden.
