Poem: "Plush Dragons"

This poem came out of the March 4, 2014 Poetry Fishbowl. It was inspired and sponsored by [personal profile] thnidu. It also fills the "traveling" square in my 1-31-14 card for the [community profile] origfic_bingo fest.

"Plush Dragons"

Most people think of dragons
as gold or silver, metallic visions
of magic and mystery.

Some think of chromatic dragons,
red and blue and green, black and white.

It is the plush dragons
who go everywhere,
hiding in plain sight,
riding on shoulders.

They are alive without life,
speaking without breath,
able to flit from one body to another.

They are always traveling,
clinging to a self-mobile perch,
peeking out from under someone's hair
at a bardic circle or a joust.

They are familiars, muses,
assistants, associates,
slipping between the cracks
of assumption and myth --

invulnerable and ubiquitous
in ways the great wyrms
could never be.

Poll: Second General Fund Poll for March 4 Fishbowl

This is a followup to the first general fund poll for the March 4, 2014 Poetry Fishbowl.  You get to choose a $10 poem and a $15 poem to publish.  Everyone is eligible to vote in this poll.  I'll keep it open until at least Tuesday night.  If there's a clear answer then, I'll close it.  Otherwise I may leave it open a bit longer.

10 Things About Love

Here's a useful set of observations about love.

The top 5 points are generally applicable.  The later ones deal more in cultural differences between men and women, and/or Ask-Hint communication styles.  In particular, an Ask couple (or moresome) will run high to explicit communication, a Hint couple will be mutually fluent in unspoken agreement, and a mixed couple will have the cited disagreements about "talk to me, I can't read your mind."

Poetry Fishbowl on Tuesday, March 18, 2014

This is an advance announcement for the Tuesday, March 18, 2014 Poetry Fishbowl.  The extra series fishbowl comes as a perk from recent fishbowls reaching the $250 goal.  An audience poll selected "Polychrome Heroics" as the poetic series to be featured.  I'll be soliciting ideas for Damask, their family, other established characters, superheroes, supervillains, supernaries (ordinary people competing on a super level, like Batman does), blue plate specials (people using superpowers in a conventional job), crickets (people hiding their superpowers), forks (anti-super bigots), damsels or gentlemen in distress, unusual types of hero or villain, rivals, superhero teams, gizmos or super-gizmos, costumes, superpowers, monologues, death traps, diabolical plans, thematic vehicles, Urbanburg and its university, Littleton, other established locations in Terramagne, secret lairs, "escape-proof" prisons (aren't), trains or bridges and other hazardous combat locations, science labs, super battles, being "in the fuse box" (hiding superpowers), coming "out of the fuse box" (revealing superpowers), struggling to discover or control superpowers, declaring a nemesis, saving the day, squabbles between people with and without superpowers, the challenges of having superpowers, creative uses of superpowers, side scenes from previous events, and poetic forms in particular.

Given the complexity of some characters in this setting, it's faster and easier for me to work with premade ones than to develop new ones as I'm writing.  I can make some fresh ones on the fly, but you're likely to get more poems total if you mix old and new characters than if you ask for all made-from-scratch ones.  See the character list (Part 1, Part 2, Part 3, Part 4) for ideas.  If you can't find the flavor of soup you want, go ahead and ask for it.  You may also find inspiration in the setting description for Terramagne.

If you're interested, mark the date on your calendar, and please hold actual prompts until the "Poetry Fishbowl Open" post next week.  This fishbowl is open to everyone, and you may share the announcement with anyone interested in the motifs that Polychrome Heroics incorporates.

Polychrome Heroics Vocabulary

Since there will be a bonus fishbowl featuring Polychrome Heroics on Tuesday, March 18, I though it would be helpful to post the vocabulary for Terramagne.  Much of this is slang relating to superpowers and associated concepts, although some of it deals with other aspects of culture or technology.  Some has already appeared in the series and some hasn't yet.  Feel free to use this as inspiration for prompts.
