Poem: "The Love of Brothers"

This poem came out of the February 4, 2014 Poetry Fishbowl. It was inspired by prompts from [personal profile] mdlbear and LJ user Siege. It also fills the "wooing" square in my 2-1-14 card for the [community profile] cottoncandy_bingo fest. This poem has been sponsored by Anthony & Shirley Barrette. It is set in nether-Earth, like The Steamsmith, but happens a lot earlier.

Story: "Squiggles" 1510.04.10

"Squiggles: Excerpts from Nleimen's Journal"

Oh, by all that is licensed! Vloroshaal gave me a novice's set of Rainforest Glory watercolors. That is the top luxury brand. The box only has the eight basic colors (red, orange, yellow, green, blue, violet, brown, and black) rather than the sixteen that I have in my current set, but for the boost in quality I will gladly mix my own in-between colors on a palette. I'd feel guilty about the expense but Vloroshaal says that he knows a Mayaloi woman who works at Rainforest Glory so he gets these sets wholesale for the gift shop in his gallery.

What in the world can I get for him? I would be totally embarrassed to send him my artwork. He looks at professional art all day long! I will have to think of something else.

See the landing page for "Squiggles: Excerpts from Nleimen's Journal."

Weather here dumped a lot of snow and then cleared up.  It's been cold so the snow is sticking.  I've seen squirrels around, and more cardinals and woodpeckers drawn to the feeders.

Editing vs. Censorship

It's time for our regularly scheduled SFWA squabble. Here's a piece by C.C. Finlay and a piece by David Gerrold. You know how I express my dissatisfaction with this organization that seems to start a brawl every few months? I stay away from it, and associate with saner ones.

Let me explain the difference in between editing and censorship. (Credentials: I am a professional editor. I am a diploma-holding literary scholar.) These things are about the power differential between people who make decisions, and people who are affected by those decisions ...
