Animated Math

This thing is mesmerizing.  (Link courtesy of my_partner_doug and janetmiles.  It illustrates the factors within numbers, and prime numbers.  I remember this thing from other lives -- it's a first contact demo.  Math is a universal concept, so most aliens would be able to figure out that the thing is counting and showing relationships of numbers, even if they might not get all the fancy bits.  Then you just add your language track, and you can teach a whole lot of concepts very quickly and easily.  I'm so happy to see this again.

This poem is spillover from the December 4, 2012 Poetry Fishbowl.  It was inspired by a comment from rix_scaedu under the poem "Quarterboard."  It has been sponsored out of the general fund, based on an audience poll.  This poem belongs to the series Path of the Paladins, which you can explore further via the Serial Poetry page.

Second General Fund Poll for December 4, 2012 Poetry Fishbowl

This is a followup poll now that the previous poll has closed and another donation came in.  You have $26 to put into one epic, among the more popular ones.  Everyone is eligible to vote.  I will keep this poll open until at least Monday evening.  If there's a clear winner then, I'll close it.  Otherwise I may leave it open a little longer.

Superconductor Article with Pictures

[personal profile] siliconshaman found this awesome article with history and photos of the Waxahachie superconducting supercollider, home of my science fiction project Schrodinger's Heroes.  If you've been reading this project of mine, I highly encourage you to check out this reference material.

One interesting thing I noticed is that on the map, Waxahachie is actually inside  the Ring.  I've always had the impression that the town is a short distance outside  the Ring.  With the town inside, it would be subject to most of the odd permutations, and there would just be no keeping a lid on any of this.  With it outside, only rare occurrences reach that far.  Most seem to stay inside the Ring.  So I suspect this is a divergence point between their dimension and ours.  *laugh*  And if they saw one with the town inside, they'd probably freak.

I got to fooling around with the Google Map for Texas.  Look for Dallas, then Waxahachie.  The farm-to-market roads are actually labelled  that in this area.  Also there is an Ash Drive just north of Lake Waxahachie.  Gotta love it.

[personal profile] chanter_greenie and I have been discussing an alternate version of the show, and America, in what we've designated the orange dimension (as contrasted with mine, in the scarlet dimension).  Now I'm wondering if their Waxahachie is inside or outside the Ring.

As a general note, please let me know if you find information about the superconducting supercollider in Texas.  I've been mostly relying on the Wikipedia article about it.  I can always use more detail.
