Explore the Galaxy

My God, it's full of stars.

I remember this program, though in other lives I usually encounter it as a hologram.  This is it, though, an early little version of the explore-the-galaxy program that humans will be playing with in space one day.  It makes me so happy to see this.  I've seen even earlier versions and I always stop to play with them.  I love these things.  Science made this.  I love science with a deep and fiery passion, and things like this are why.  Even when I can't fly between the stars in body ... I can still do this.

Happy, happy little soul.

Update on "Take These Wings"

[personal profile] catsittingstill has posted an update of "Take These Wings," now with chord notation provided and the lyrics updated to match the MP3.

I love this song more every time I hear it.  For me it illuminates a whole new perspective in my Fledgling Grace series. Crowdfunding is so awesome.  Anyhow, if you like the lady's work, drop a little something in the tip jar.  She also has an album, The King's Lute.

[community profile] cripbigbang is all about characters with canonical disabilities.  Any fandom or original settings; any disability; 10,000+ words for fiction, 1,000 words for meta, 1 piece for art, some other options are available.

I should avoid the temptation to do this for fiction, probably.  I doubt I could sell it, and that's a big chunk of words.  I might think about it for meta, 1,000 words is a short  article for me.  I do have a lot of characters with handicaps and it's a diversity of interest to me.

I know I've got some other friends who are interested in this sort of material, reading and writing and whatnot, so take a look.  This could be an interesting  fest.

My Dark Fantasy Bingo Card 12-2-12

Below is my card for [community profile] darkfantasybingo. This fest celebrates the interaction between humanity and the fantastical. It focuses on the razor's edge between dread and anticipation, shadow and light, the unknown and the known. Come explore the dark side ... if you dare! Some of the content may be NSFW. Read the prompts, rules, and fill requirements first. The signup post is here.

I thought this might be an effective way to attract some new readers, and so far, I've picked up a few. It's also useful for developing a different set of series than I've explored in other fests. This is the first one where I didn't feel like ruling out any of the prompts. Dark fantasy? Bring it.

I'm still trying to find ways of monetizing the fests better, because I really like the thematically batched inspiration and the access to new audiences when I post bingoes. Catch is, there's a conflict of interest currently between writing things for sale and writing things for bingo: Unsold/unposted items don't count and don't gain new eyeballs, whereas doing too much stuff for free is not good for my bottom line. People have shown some interest in specific prompts as the new cards have gone up. If you'd like to sponsor a particular square, especially if you have an idea for what character, series, or situation it would fit -- talk to me and we'll work something out. So far nobody has taken me up on this but I'm still hopeful. I will post some of the fills for free, because I'm using this to attract new readers; but if it brings in money, that means I can do more of it. That's part of why I'm crossing some of the bingo prompts with other projects, such as the Poetry Fishbowl. I have sold some items from previous fests that way.

Here's a new idea: the half-price sales for the Poetry Fishbowl are increasingly popular, and the vast majority of what I've written for fests -- except for a few oneshots combined with independent fishbowl prompts -- has been tied to existing series. What do you think about the idea of doing a half-price sale on unposted fills, sometime near the end of a fest?

If you have other ideas in this direction, please share them.

Underlined prompts have been filled.
