Monday Update 8-13-12

These are some posts from the later part of last week in case you missed them:
Shooting Stars
Best Enemies
Torn Tongue: Verbs Beginning with "E"
Sketchfest is open! (with links to pictures)
Why I Love Him
Hard Things

The August 7 Poetry Fishbowl went well.  I'm still running some polls and stuff for that because things ran long and complicated in places.

Poetry in Microfunding:
"An Amazing Carriage of Amber and Jade" belongs to the Steamsmith series.  Maryam experiments with combining two important alchemical materials.  "The Lost and Found Legion" belongs to The Silk Road Allies.  It is being funded in installments by marina_bonomi, and describes how China and Italy came to form an alliance.

Torn World writing update:
Approved as canon: "Squiggles: Excerpts from Nleimen's Journal," (fiction) "Packing for the Long Haul" "A Gift of Time" "Shards of a Different Past" (poetry).  Back to me for edits: "Breaking the Ice," (fiction), "Patterns in the Grass" (poetry), "Half-Leg," (nonfiction). Currently in front of the canon board: "The Bones of Need" (fiction), "The Girl Who Wanted Too Much" (poetry), "Ghost Bat" (nonfiction).  Drafted: "Cutting Cords and Clasping Hands," "Like Ash Before the Wind," "From Dark to Bright," "Beached Fish," "The Inappropriate But Useful Disposal of Lettuce" "A Thin Red Trail" "The Museum of Mortality" "Finding the Holes" (fiction), "Changes in the Wind" "Old Feelings, New Feelings," "Five Red Beads," "The Urge to Fly," "Lullaby for a Nap at Noon," "Camping on the Lost Road," "Neighboring Attractions," "The Widow-Keeper's Lullaby," "Starfall in Red and Blue Time" (poetry), "Publishers in the Empire" (nonfiction).  In revision at home: "Water Dance," "When the Wind's Teeth Sing," "Raining Kittens," (fiction), "Breeding the Perfect Fighter," "The Smallest Invaders" (poetry).  Currently writing: "Catch of the Day," "Reaching for the Moons" "Winterheart" "A Cold Clear Night" (fiction).

We've had intermittent rain here, not a lot, but enough to help.  Some of the grass is starting to turn faintly green again.  The field corn is a lost cause, though.

Update from Kajones_writing

It's been a busy week for kajones_writing, with more news and some new fiction.  "Being the Author" is a discussion of unreliable narrators, creepy stalker characters, and other aspects of writing.  I really enjoyed this and hope to see more of it.  "In Other News" talks about the recent move, the auction, and more online places to find the author.  "Update" has news about the archive website and other stuff.

I have sponsored two stories, previously written for me.  They feature John Good Road, a Lakota vampire.  I get tired of all-white vampires, so I like to mix things up by requesting other options.  I really like how John is turning out.

Sponsored: Donor House: John Good Road: John’s First Visit to the Donor House (part 1) brings John into the communal setting of the Donor House, after he's spent a lot of time bumming around with his jerktastic creator or just being alone.

Sponsored: Donor House: John Good Road: A Conversation with Alice shows John trying to buffer the tension between Alice and Nick, two of the house leaders. Despite the cultural differences, John has really good people skills and makes an effective safety valve.

Other stories include: 14: AU Thear: Evelyn: A Planet Outside the Window, 15: Donor House: Rebecca: Ace’s Deal, World Walkers: Unknown World: Clio’s Story – Part 1, 16: The Brotherhood: Meredith: Talking to Conrad, 17: Donor House: Beatrice: Auctions, and 18: World Walkers: Kankirin: Lexi’s Story – Part 1.

This poem came out of the January 2012 Crowdfunding Creative Jam.  It was inspired by a prompt from clare_dragonfly, as a retelling of "Diamonds and Toads."  It has been selected in an audience poll as the free epic, after the August 7, 2012 Poetry Fishbowl made its $200 goal.  This poem belongs to the series Fiorenza the Wisewoman, and you can read more about it on the Serial Poetry page.

Poetry Fishbowl Report for August 7, 2012

This month's theme was "modern myths."  I worked from noon to 3:30 AM, so about 13 hours 30 minutes, allowing for lunch and supper breaks.  It took a long time for any prompts to come in, then I got a surge midday.  I wrote 23 poems.  The length was distributed across all categories.  I had a mix of single and combined prompts going into the poems.  Most were free verse, but there were a couple of oddball forms like the four-dimensional poem and the "C.S. Eye" podcast script.

A total of 18 people sent prompts.  You have new prompter/new donor scribble_myname to thank for the second freebie poem.  This was another good month for enthusiastic crosstalk that generated poems; this is where a lot of the multiple-prompt poems came from.
