Poetry Fishbowl Report for May 1, 2012

The May theme was "anti-heroes and anti-villains."  Prompts were a slow trickle through most of the day, which was fine, because I was writing slowly as well.  A total of 15 people sent prompts.  There were 35 comments on LJ and 4 on DW, counting mine.  I worked from 12:15 PM to 3:45 AM, so about 13 hours 30 minutes, accounting for lunch and supper breaks.  Then I spent some more time writing spillover poems on subsequent days.

I wrote 13 poems on Tuesday and another 4 later.  The poems were mostly epics with a handful of shorter ones.  Most were free verse, with one done in unrhymed triplets, two in unrhymed quatrains, and a villanelle.  One-prompt poems predominated.

Two new series were launched.  The Asgard Eddas includes "Within the Wolf's Jaws" from this month and "The Forging of Brisingamen" ($48) from the February 19, 2008 fishbowl.  This series comes from my main science fiction setting and has a Norse flavor.  One God's Story of Mid-Life Crisis began this month with "Good Help Is Hard To Find."  Comments on that poem inspired three more poems.  "Dead Soldiers on Parade" ($48.50) is available in the second general poll.  It relates Shaeth's attempts to keep Trobby from getting too drunk too often.  "Manning the Handbasket" ($20) shows Hevarre, God of Good, coming to Shaeth about the problem of finding a new God of Evil.  "Blood Will Tell" ($20) introduces a prophecy about the successor.  Finally, the series title is courtesy of minor_architect.  I couldn't resist.  I've added these three to the unsold poetry list.

There were three new prompters, woohoo!  fatfred, kitrona, and DW user avia have activated the second freebie poem.  Special thanks to minor_architect for managing the linkback poem "Signs Along the Way."  (That still has 4 verses outstanding.  You can reveal those by linking to the unsold poetry list or a specific poem that you like.)  Special thanks to my_partner_doug for managing the ticker.

Donations started out slow but ended well.  We met the $200 goal for a free epic, and the poll settled on "Crossing the Line."  The first general poll funded "A Catalog of Flaws" and the second one is still going.  The $250 goal for an extra fishbowl session was met, which puts the tally at 2 out of 3.  The $300 goal for a half-price poetry sale was met, and an audience poll selected Path of the Paladins. running May 14-20.

New Crowdfunding Project: "Daron's Guitar Chronicles"

Cecilia Tan has made a very detailed post about her Kickstarter project "Daron's Guitar Chronicles," based on the Rose and Bay Award winning webserial.  She explores her experiences with this fundraising model and mentions some alternatives to Kickstarter.  If you're into crowdfunding, you should really read this.

New Linkback Host?

I need a new volunteer to host the linkback poems for the Poetry Fishbowl.  You need to be available from about midday to night (but not necessarily the wee hours when I tend to close) on the first Tuesday of the month.  Ideally I'd like a volunteer who can do this regularly, but I can go from person to person if necessary.

How this works: I send the linkback poem, usually a week in advance.  Once the "Fishbowl Open" post goes live, I notify you.  You post that the linkback poem is now available, with a little information about how many verses it has and its series, etc. then you tell me that post is live.  I edit the link into my fishbowl post.  People are then supposed to tell you when and where they boosted the signal for the fishbowl post.  You edit the linkback post to add one new verse of the poem for each service (LiveJournal, Dreamwidth, Facebook, Twitter, etc.) on which someone boosts the signal.  If you go to bed before I close the fishbowl, just add a note to that effect in your post.  A day or two after the fishbowl ends, I'll repost the poem on my blog and take over posting new verses if it's not already finished.

What you get: first peek at an unpublished poem in full, some extra traffic to your LiveJournal, thanks in the followup reports, and listing in my Donors filter so you can see all the donor-locked posts.  And me having time to write more poetry since I don't have to juggle this extra non-writing task during a fishbowl.

It has been warmer and intermittently damp here.  Grass is growing lushly.  The barrel garden is fully planted and I trimmed around it yesterday.  The herb gardens have lots of new plants too.  Little green fruits are visible on some of the fruit trees.

Poem: "Uneasy Things"

This poem came out of the May 1, 2012 Poetry Fishbowl.  It was inspired by prompts from the_vulture and kelkyag.  It belongs to the series Path of the Paladins; you can find the other poems via the Serial Poetry page.

This microfunded poem is being posted one verse at a time, as donations come in to cover them. The rate is $.50/line, so $5 will reveal 10 new lines, and so forth. There is a permanent donation button on my profile page, or you can contact me for other arrangements. You can also ask me about the number of lines per verse, if you want to fund a certain number of verses.

So far sponsors include: general fund, rix_scaedujanetmiles
