The Worth of a Diploma

According to this article, college education has dramatically increased women's earnings. While it doesn't affect the proportion of their earnings compared to men -- women still make only 75% of what men make for the same work -- it does give them a chance to enter higher-paying jobs.

I am heartily in favor of paying teachers a high salary. As for assessing their skill, other methods besides standardized scores are available, just not in very wide use. Look in the National Educational Association magazine for descriptions of some; they pop up fairly often.
