Pepper Spray Pike is a meme!

Recently Lt. John Pike went all trigger-happy with his pepper spray on a row of peaceful protesters.  The Internet responded by launching him to memetic jerkfame.  Pepper Spray Pike is now all over everywhere.  He has become as ubiquitous and disturbing as Creepy the Clown.

Read an essay discussing the symbolism of pasting PSP into famous images.  It's a good take on the history of satire and art in activism.

See the Tumblr feed "Pepper Spraying Cop" collecting satirized paintings.  Here's a slideshow with many others.

Also on Facebook I've seen Pepper Spray Pike hosing My Little Pony, Disney critters, various movie heroes, and God.  See some copies in the "Pepper Spray Pike" gallery of my LJ scrapbook.

There is also a controversial image including Pike's name and phone number.  Yes, that's playing dirty.  But you know what?  When following the rules does not keep people safe and meet their needs, some people will decide that following the rules is no longer in their best interest.  They will then switch to other tactics.  That is what happens when those who are supposed to enforce the rules become abusive.  It is an unbreakable rule of history and there is nothing anyone can do about it except avoid triggering it by practicing oppression.  It really sucks that humans have not yet learned this, because solving problems rationally is much more efficient and human than solving them irrationally.

You can sign a petition against the use of chemical weapons and violence against peaceful protesters.  Remember, Americans have a CONSTITUTIONAL RIGHT peaceably to assemble and to petition the government for a redress of grievances.  Our ancestors fought a war over that, in part, because King George wanted them to shut up or else.  They said fuck that noise and here we are today, losing an argument with ourselves, AGAIN.  Epic facepalm.

Please try not to turn any ensuing discussion into a rant, as is happening in many other threads on this topic.

Humans aren't perfect; our nature forbids
We're toys of our terrors and pets of our ids
No humans aren't perfect, so say what you like
We'll always have people like Pepper Spray Pike.

But they shouldn't have badges, they shouldn't have guns
And never a taser that zorches and stuns
They shouldn't have power. Aww, don't make me start--
But spare me the cop with the criminal's heart!

If you run a college, take warning from me
Your guards are the face that the nation will see
You can't keep the secret; we may look alone,
But a camera watches from every damn phone.

It's hard to stand up to meet Justice's call
And being non-violent's hardest of all
Let me see good in all people alike
Not yield to my fears like old Pepper Spray Pike!
I love this song. I hope it goes viral! Did you write it, or find it somewhere?
I wrote it. In response to this post, actually. Thank you for the inspiration :-)

I have polished it some and have a tune for it, but I have thrashed my voice in the process. I will try to record at least a rough version tomorrow, as I think it would be good to get it out fast, since it's so topical.

judifilksign pointed out that this scans to "Sweet Betsey from Pike." It's always handy to have a tune that lots of people already know. Perhaps you could list that as an alternate, along with the one you've composed?
Um. This is true... And it's amusing that the names match.

The tune of Sweet Betsy from Pike ... well, it's certainly a contrast to the subject matter.

I guess I have nothing against people doing it that way if they want. I think for my own part I will stick with my tune, though.
:-D I look forward to hearing this.
:-) It is now available on my LJ.
... and I suppose that the mob was being "non-violent" when they completely encircled and blocked the officers, telling them that the officers weren't going to be able to go home? The terms for that are "unlawful detention" and "obstructing the police." How would you have proposed the police deal with this less violently than through the use of a non-lethal gas?
Have you actually seen the picture?
Yes, and as moving video. Your point being?
In the picture they don't look encircled to me. I can see the grass behind their legs; it looks like they would have no problem walking away--as long as they were willing to walk away.
>>and I suppose that the mob was being "non-violent" when they completely encircled <<

Blockades are nonviolent, yes. Violent is causing pain or injury. If a group of people is, say, swinging clubs or throwing bricks, that's violent. People standing or sitting without attempting to strike someone -- even if they are in the way and pissing you off -- are not violent and it is not okay to beat them up or poison them.

>>How would you have proposed the police deal with this less violently than through the use of a non-lethal gas?<<

Carry them off and arrest them, which is what some better-trained police elsewhere have done. Properly trained police know how to do that, and in fact, properly trained nonviolent protesters know how to respond appropriately. It's possible to carry on that kind of political discourse without people getting hurt, which keeps matters toward the rational end of the scale rather than the irrational scale. We're seeing quite a range in capacity and responsibility on both sides, across the dozens of protests around the world.
and I suppose that the mob was being "non-violent" when they completely encircled

Blockades are nonviolent, yes.

I disagree with that characterization. When one "blockades," one is forcibly preventing others from going in the directions they desire. The direct threat is that, if the victim attempts to simply ignore you and walk through the blockade, one will oppose him using one's own strength and mass; the implicit threat that one will meet such an attempt may be more-direct violence.

One does not have the right to blockade people from transiting public space, nor private space which one does not own. When one blockades in such a fashion, one is committing an act of aggression. When one blockades persons in such a manner as to prevent their leaving an area, one commits the crime of "unlawful detention," which is a serious felony, just one step down from "kidnapping."

People standing or sitting without attempting to strike someone -- even if they are in the way and pissing you off -- are not violent and it is not okay to beat them up or poison them.

Is it okay to simply walk through or over them, if the passage were otherwise lawful to make? If so, then you accord greater rights to people in proportion to their individual mass and total numbers.

As a fairly-strong, 300-lb man, easily-able to shove aside weaker and smaller people, and a member of a numerous family, I am actually rather pleased by the implicit principle here, and look forward to being able to shove and intimidate my way, for instance, to the front of lines! All hail non-violence! :)

How would you have proposed the police deal with this less violently than through the use of a non-lethal gas?

Carry them off and arrest them, which is what some better-trained police elsewhere have done. Properly trained police know how to do that, and in fact, properly trained nonviolent protesters know how to respond appropriately.

Human beings don't come equipped with handles, and since the protestors outnumbered and had SURROUNDED the police, I'm not sure how one could "carry them off and arrest them," unless "properly trained police" are also psionic teleporters. (In particular, how were the police supposed to carry prisoners through the circle of protestors?) The other alternative the police had was to use nightsticks or even more lethal force, which would have caused more severe injuries to the protestors than the pepper-spray.
