Sickout -- Obama, Education, and the Religious Right

Isn't this the kind of thing a President should be doing with regards to education, and parents should be supporting?

The President of the United States is planning to talk to students in the United States about the importance of staying in school, setting educational goals and taking personal responsibility. His address is scheduled for 11:00 a.m. Central time this coming Tuesday, September 8. A right wing radio talker here in Dallas thinks that next Tuesday would be a good day for parents to keep their kids home from school. He thinks it would be a good day for the kids to be “sick.”

I recommend that folks with school-age children plan to watch the President's speech with your kids. It doesn't matter if you agree or disagree with what he says. What matters is you get your kids in the habit of paying attention to what their leader is doing, and you talk about that stuff, whatever your personal opinions about it are. This particular speech happens to be aimed at kids so it's perfect for that.

Gray Ships Pass

This memorial cartoon for Sen. Kennedy reminded me of a song...

What can you see on the horizon?
Why do the white gulls call?
Across the sea a pale moon rises,
The ships have come to carry you home.

And all will turn to silver glass,
A light on the water, all souls pass.

And high on the ramparts of old Camelot, a voice cries, "Ho! A sail!"

Recommended Reading on Sex & Gender

I've done a number of panels at science fiction conventions that span sexual orientation, gender identity, and related issues in speculative fiction and gender studies nonfiction. Outer Alliance Pride Day is collecting posts that promote positive representation of GLBT issues in speculative fiction.  So here is my contribution, the master list of recommended reading from all those panels.
