November 16th, 2007 - The Wordsmith's Forge
The Writing & Other Projects of Elizabeth Barrette
Tonight I got into a fun conversation with the editor of Flashing Swords magazine, who just bought three of my poems. Among other things, this led me to a page discussing the diminuendo form of poetry. So here is mine:

Autumn's Daughter

How my gypsy heart
leaps in my breast
when I watch
the leaves

This fits with a number of my favorite motifs: 1) I write a lot of nature poetry. 2) I love syllabic forms. 3) I admire poems whose shape subtly hints at their mood or topic. (I am harder to impress with straight-up shape poems: they have to be really good.) If you read a lot of my poems, you'll see that I often use stanzas with a rising or falling shape, sometimes in combination.
