Electric cars didn't become popular because with battery technology back then, even if they had rechargeable batteries (which I doubt they had), you could cram batteries into every available crevice and still not have enough power to go more than a few miles before needing to recharge or replace the batteries. So it was inefficient and obnoxious, hence why internal combustion became all the rage.
