Two other trueisms:

1 - Never use the "stone-shape" spell on a wall if you're only a Lvl 1 spell-caster and there's a 44 hit point demi-god behind that wall. You end up looking like a Ba-co and being carried around in a pouch until someone gets around to paying to have you resurrected.

2 - If you are a Lvl 1 half-elven magic-user/thief [seeing a trend here?], do not use a "spider web" spell to climb up a wall and then try to use a sling to throw stones down on your attackers. You really can't do much with both feet and one hand stuck to the wall and the other hand with a sling glued to it that you can't swing around because you got yourself wedged up under the ceiling.

Just sayin'...
